A Cal Fan's Notes: Coaches Dinner and 5 Star Recruits

Bear Fans,
It’s hard to find time to write when one spends most of his day on the PETA website looking for thick waisted naked girls who would rather “Bare Skin, than Wear Skin.” Must have something to do with age.
Wonder if those folks are pals of Burlap, Redwood and Ayr our tree sitting friends? They all seem to have roughly the same I.Q., and bodies which resemble Oak tree trunks. Toss in the Anna Nicole frenzy and one wonders why we bothered going to Cal in the first place. What a country!
Longing for the pleasures of amoebic dysentery, but unable to self induce it, we journeyed down to the Cal Stanford Basketball game a couple of weeks ago.
True, we left sicker than we arrived, but during halftime had an interesting talk with some folk.
Now trust me. I get all my knowledge through rumor and gossip. I haven’t a clue if what I am about to say is true—but those “in the know”—insisted that we shouldn’t hold our collective breath waiting for anymore 5 Star recruits to dazzle us with their egos on the gridiron. The “Insiders” are of the opinion that (unless the kid has the character and work ethic of a Jerry Rice or Ronnie Lott), if he’s a 5 Star baby we won’t be going after him.
Seems the staff has had it with the prima donnas, posse’s, parents, hangers on, and general “T.O.itis” which comes from such 17 year old stars.
One: as we all know a 2 Star recruit like Dameon Hughs is just as likely shine as a 5 Star recruit like Ronnie Knox (let’s test your age on that one), is likely to flame out.
The baggage they bring and the problems they cause from a team and moral standpoint are just not worth it—or so I’m told.
So don’t be concerned that some other Pac 10 Schools might start out with a higher rated recruiting class than we get in the next few years. Keep an eye on the character of the kids, combined with their ability.
Also, look for lots of O linemen and D linemen to be in the mix. Something about having 10 of each, each spring, and letting the fittest survive. If you’re wondering why--just think A.J. Aarington and 2,000 yards.
If any of this is true, hats off to Tedford and his staff. Certainly, they won’t pass up any Ronnie Lott types, but just having a fifth Star by their name, is no guarantee that Cal will go after them. Tedford's amazing.

Further proof I spend too much time looking at PETA sights:

Jeff, Just a note to correct your "Bates" comments.
Tom Bates is the mayor of Berkeley. Steve Bates, who passed away a couple of years ago,
was an optometrist in the N. Sacramento valley. Tom was an end and Steve
was a halfback both of whom played on the '59 Rose Bowl team.
Jim Burrus

(and half a dozen other writers as well, I might ad)

I incorrectly mixed up Mayor Tom Bates and the Late Steve Bates—both Bears from the 50’s. My staff will be severely reprimanded. Mea Culpa to all concerned. JW
